Charles Gibbs

Sneads Ferry, NC: Command Sgt. Major Ret. Charles Henry Gibbs, age 78, formerly of Benson, died Monday at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington. Funeral Service will be 2:00PM Friday at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson. Officiating will be Revs. Ira Smith and Alan Gibson. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson with Full Military Honors.Mr. Gibbs was born July 24, 1939 in Johnston County to the late Willie Austin and Annie Louise McLamb Gibbs. He was also preceded in death by his son, Terry Joe Gibbs; brothers, W. Marshall Gibbs, James Alton Gibbs and John Howard Gibbs; sisters, Pearl G. Creech and Verna Mae G. Lucas. Mr. Gibbs retired from the US Army where he received the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters; Joint Service Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster; Army of Occupation Medal (Germany); Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Berlin); Philippine Presidential Unit Citation(Two Awards). After retirement from the military Mr. Gibbs retired from the NC Department of Corrections with eighteen years of service.  He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Sneads Ferry, NC where he served as a past trustee.  Mr. Gibbs was also a member of the VFW, Jacksonville American Legion, Topsail Island Moose Lodge and Rotary Club of Sneads Ferry.Surviving include wife of fifty-nine years, Mary Frances Wood Gibbs; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tim Honeycutt of Benson; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Karen Gibbs of Benson; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brothers, W.A. Gibbs of New Jersey, Jimmy Gibbs of Texas and Paul Gibbs of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends Friday 12:30PM-1:45PM prior to the service at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson and other times at the home of Diane and Tim Honeycutt, 61 Beasley Estates Drive, Benson, NC 27504.Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 305 Lakeside Drive, Sneads Ferry, NC 28460.Service Information
