Attleboro, MA: Edna Stewart Dawes, 94, formally of Mt. Hope St and most recently residing at Garden Place Health Care in Attleboro, passed way peacefully on August 24, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Edna Viola Stewart was born in Four Oaks, NC, at home on her family farm. She was the daughter of the late Luther D. and Mackie Barefoot Stewart. Edna was the wife of the late Donald Robert Dawes and the late William Dreesen, Sr. She was the last surviving sibling of eight; Bessie Langdon, Ruth Allan, Hazel Hayes, Melvin Stewart, Edwin Stewart, Lloyd Stewart, Ila Wrenn.
Upon graduating from Four Oaks High School she moved to Baltimore, MD. working for Westinghouse Corp. testing radio equipment during World War II. She then worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone. After her marriage to Donald Dawes she moved to Rhode Island and then settled in North Attleboro. She was a member of Local 324 International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. Edna worked locally for Mini-Systems, Inc., Augat, Inc., and as a home healthcare provider for the elderly.
Edna was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Attleboro and served in the Sunday school nursery. She enjoyed art and would paint in her free time. She loved working in her garden and spending time fishing with her grandchildren on Falls Pond. During retirement with her husband Bill, they lived several years near the ocean in Wilmington, NC where she enjoyed spending time at the beaches. Most of all Edna especially cherished the time she spent with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Robert and his wife, Vickie Dawes of Cary, NC, Janet and her husband, James Hale of N. Attleboro, MA, Deborah Moody and her long time companion, Robert Bukin of N.Attleboro, MA, David and his wife, Lynne Dawes of N.Attleboro, MA , Jeffrey and his wife, Nancy Dawes of N. Attleboro, MA. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 11:00AM Saturday, September 1, 2018, at Rose and Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson. Burial will follow in Hodges Chapel Cemetery in Benson, NC.
The family will receive friends 10:00AM-10:45AM Saturday prior to the service at Rose and Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC.
