Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God...Matthew 5:9
Grace Elizabeth passed into heaven guided by the steady hand of God Her Father and Jesus Her Savior at sunset on the 20th of June. For several long years, she fought a gallant fight against a disease that crumbled her spine but not her spirit that crippled her hands but not her heart.
Grace was born in Benson during the Great Depression, the middle daughter of Joseph Monroe Adams and Lillie Louvenia Adams. She grew up on a working farm along with her brother William Clarence (deceased) and her sisters Ruth Blanche (deceased), Lillie Christine, Hazel Carilie, and Edna Lou. Grace attended Meadow High School where she played on the basketball team, a passion that would continue throughout her life as a true blue Carolina Tar Heel.
Grace Elizabeth met Jephenneh Caleb Barbour of Benson on a double date, and the ensuing courtship begat a marriage on February 17, 1952. Their love for each other created an inseparable partnership that lasted until Joe breathed his last with her, his “little red hen,” by his side on May 31, 2007. Their reunion in Heaven will be a time of joy and laughter.
From their union, two children were born, Jennie Jo on February 26, 1956, and Steve Caleb on February 10, 1959. And Steve and his wife Teresa Miller’s union created two children, Elizabeth Sumter born on March 10, 1993, and William Miller born on October 26, 1995.
Grace was dedicated to many people, and her ability to see the good in all was an inspiration. She was dedicated to her family and home, and her ability to create a loving and lovely home was a source of great comfort. She was dedicated to her community and church, and her belief in the power of love, forgiveness, and peace within was a source of strength for all those fortunate enough to know “Miss Grace.”
May She Rest in Peace.
