Benson: Mrs. Hazel Gunter Sorrell, age 100, died Monday at Magnolia Glen in Raleigh. Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, at Benson United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Al Hocutt. Burial will follow in Hodges Chapel PFWB Church Cemetery, Benson, NC.
Mrs. Sorrell was born June 13, 1916 in Augusta, Georgia to Alphia K. and Beulah Reynolds Gunter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Thomas Sorrell, Jr.; daughter, Diane S. Hardison; sisters, Helen G. Wilkins, Meg G. Carson and Effie G. Wright; and brother, Al Gunter. Mrs. Sorrell was a retired school teacher in the North Carolina school system and a member of Benson United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sorrell is survived by children and spouses, W. T. Sorrell, III and wife, Helen of Valdese, Kay S. Painter and husband, Tony of Clayton, Betsy S. Smith and husband, Mike of Kernersville, Martha S. McLamb and husband, Tony of Benson, Marilyn S. Kinsey and husband, Fred of Albemarle, Vivian S. Britt and husband, Tom of Wilmington, and Todd Sorrell and wife, Ruth of Fuquay-Varina; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother, William "Bill" Gunter of Salisbury, Maryland; many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.
