Janice Marie Olson (Jan) passed away at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital ICU in South Pasadena, Florida on August 21, 2021 at the age of 72 years from Covid. Although fully vaccinated, her immune system was damaged by her brave six-year fight with cancer, and she was not able to fight off the disease.
Janice was born in 1948 in San Francisco, California in Letterman Army Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco. Her father was a career Army officer and as a result Janice lived not only in San Francisco, but also in Germany and Japan. Much of her life was spent in the Richmond area of Virginia where she received multiple degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University. Janice moved to St. Petersburg with her mother in 2003.
Janice was preceded in death by her father, Clarence O. Olson, and her mother, Sarah O. Olson (Coats) and is survived by her brother Stewart O. Olson of St. Petersburg. She is also survived by her many beloved cousins including Barbara Berkemeier, Jenny Bowen (Jeff), Elana Bennett (Gene), Bea Coats, Belle Coats, Becky Blair (Jon), Virginia and Sharon Penny, and Cathy Baber (Bill).
Janice spent most of her working years as a Mental Health Therapist working with families and children. She loved her job and was loved by her clients.
Janice was a proud member of The Greater St. Petersburg Area Awesome Original Second Time Arounders Marching Band, playing the bells. She treasured her many friendships with the band members and their families. She enjoyed her many trips with the band including New York City where she marched in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in 2008.
Janice was a kind, generous and loving person as her many friends will testify. She loved children, the theater, and animals, including her three cats Snoopy, Mama Kitty and Gracie. She will be greatly missed by her many friends.
Janice’s memorial service will take place at Anderson McQueen Funeral Home, 2201 Dr. MLK Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33704 on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Family and friends are invited to come starting at 5:30 pm, the service will start at 7:00 pm. Masks are strongly recommended. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Metropolitan Ministries, 2301 North Tampa St., Tampa, FL 33602 and The Second Time Arounders Marching Band, P.O. A Graveside Service will be held on 2:00PM Thursday, September 9, 2021 at Benson City Cemetery in Benson, NC.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
In accordance with NC-COVID19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing guidelines and the three W's: wait, wash, and wear a face covering. Face coverings are not required, but are kindly recommended for all services.
