John Edgar Powell

Four Oaks, NC: Mr. John Edgar Powell, age 81, of Harper House Road passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh surrounded by his loving family. Graveside Services will be 3:00 PM, Friday, October 30, 2020 at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson. Officiating will be Revs. Jeff Hayes and Jim Skinner.

Mr. Powell was born on October 27, 1938 in Johnston County to Robert Phillip and Ada Elizabeth Surles Powell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelean Lee Powell; great-grandson, Grayson Quinn Sparks; and a sister, Emma Caroline Shires. Mr. Powell was a retired volunteer fireman for the Bentonville Volunteer Fire Department. He started farming from a very young age growing tobacco, corn, soybeans and various other crops. Mr. Powell was a pillar of the community of Bentonville any given day you could catch him on his tractor piddling around the farm or on his old blue pickup delivering vegetables and produce throughout the community. He took pride in the gardens he planted every summer because that was the way he showed his love to his fellowman. Mr. Powell always said that the smile on the person's face was enough payment for him when they tried to pay him. He attended New Zealand Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving are his sons, Randy Lee Powell of Blount’s Creek, NC, Keith Powell and wife, Michelle of Four Oaks; grandchildren, Justin Lee Powell and wife, Melissa, Joseph “Joey” Edgar Powell, Caitlyn P. Sparks and husband, Jesse, Phillip Powell; great-grandchildren, Kyndall Lee Powell and Easton Howard Sparks; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Thornton of Clinton, Lynn P. Britt and husband, Dave of Newton Grove; brother, Billy Powell and wife, Patsy of Dunn; numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with NC-COVID-19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing guidelines and the three W's: wait, wash, and wear a face covering.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service and other times at the home of Keith and Michelle Powell 4228 Harper House Road Four Oaks, NC 27524.
