Benson, NC: Mrs. Joyce Anne Bailey (McCallister) Fleming peacefully passed away after a long illness on Monday, October 27, at Clarebridge of Cary. A service to celebrate Joyce's life will be held at 2:00PM Friday, November 7, at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Coats. Officiating will be Pastor Jason Hammersley.
Joyce was born on July 24, 1933 in Benson, NC to the late Luther Waylon Bailey and Belle Medlin Bailey. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Dwight "Mike" McCallister; her husband, Owen Fleming; her brother, Glenard Bailey; and her nephew, Robert "Bobby" Toney.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Susan McCallister Davis and son-in-law, Edward Davis; her son, Steven Mark McCallister and daughter-in-law, Juli McCallister. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Derek, Holly, Benjamin, Brittany, Marz, Sky, Malena, and Sasha; four great grandsons, Aiden, Logan, Kai, and Jacob; brother, Donald Bailey; sister, Ernestine Bailey (Toney) Clodfelter; and nieces, Theresa, Lucinda, Cindy, Donna & Gigi.
Joyce graduated from Benson High School in 1951 and Meredith College in 1955. She was a talented pianist, and outstanding athlete, phenomenal teacher, and avid fisherman, a blonde bombshell, a wonderful mother, a loving grandmother, and an opera lover. She loved her long, relaxing summers at Topsail Beach with family and friends.
Joyce worked for over thirty-six years as a teacher for the Wake County Public School System at Douglas Elementary and Leadmine Elementary. She shared her musical talents with her students by directing and producing musical - Oklahoma and South Pacific, just to name a few. She obtained the grants and official Broadway scores; gathered teachers and parents to make costumes and build sets; then, taught the children all of the scripts, music, and dances. She also made sure her students were able to participate in "Pieces of Gold." Some of her students went on to Broadway. She was THE TEACHER you wanted your child to have!
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one's favorite charity in her honor.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church immediately following the memorial service.
