Laura Faye Wood Canaday

Four Oaks, NC: Mrs. Laura Faye Wood Canaday, age 99, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family at her home in Four Oaks, NC on Thursday, April 7, 2022.  A Viewing will be held from 12:15PM-1:15PM on Monday, April 11, 2022 followed by a Celebration of Life Service in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church Four Oaks, NC.  Rev. John I. Norman will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the sanctuary service in the fellowship hall of the church. Following the receiving of friends, a committal service will be held in the Four Oaks City Cemetery in Four Oaks, NC.

Laura Faye was born on September 24, 1922 to Joseph and Laura Johnson Wood of the Blackmon’s Crossroads Community. She was a 1939 graduate of Four Oaks High School, and continued her education at East Carolina Teacher’s College in Greenville, NC (now East Carolina University). She graduated in 1943 with a BA Degree in Primary Education and taught 2 years in Erwin, NC and 29 years at Four Oaks Elementary School. In 1944, she married high school classmate Ralph C. Canaday, Jr., at Four Oaks Baptist Church and has remained an active member for 78 years. She served her church and community in many capacities. She was a member of the professional teachers’ organization Delta Kappa Gamma. Her favorite pastime was working with plants and flowers in her yard. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a very special aunt.

She is survived by a daughter, Paula Canaday Bowman of Four Oaks, daughter-in-law, Ernestine McLamb Gooch of Benson; grandson, RC Canaday, IV, and fiancée, Monica Dills of Asheville; great-grandchild, Cameron Canaday of Asheville, Monica's children, Chloe, Kavia, and Kamiya Dills of Asheville; and many loving nieces and nephews.             She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Clarence Canaday, Jr., son, Ralph Clarence “R.C.” Canaday, III; sisters, Vidah Sanders, Vennie Johnson, Eva Wood and brothers, Charlie Wood and Melvin Wood.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the many loving caregivers that have shown their love to Laura Faye through out the years.
