Coats, NC: Mrs. Mabel Turlington Hayes, age 91, of 2590 NC Hwy 55 East passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at 3:00PM at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Coats. Rev. Ronnie Byrd will officiate. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens in Dunn.
A native of Harnett County, Mabel was born on July 30, 1921 to the late Henry A. Turlington, Sr. and the late Laylon Turlington. Mabel graduated from Coats High School in 1940 where she played on one of the first girls’ High School Basketball teams in Harnett County. She married Gerald Hayes, Sr. in 1942 and worked during World War II at Fort Bragg while her husband served in the U. S. Army. After the war, she enjoyed life as a homemaker, mother and co-owner and operator of Hayes Abattoir in Coats, North Carolina.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald W. Hayes, Sr.; a son, Kenneth Reid Hayes; parents; and a brother, B. Wade Turlington.
Mabel is survived by a son, Gerald W. Hayes, Jr. and wife, Linda Wheeler Hayes, of Dunn; 3 granddaughters, Heather Hayes Williams and husband, Dr. J. Michael Williams, Allison Hayes Taylor and husband, C. Ryan Taylor; and Parrish Hayes Daughtry, and husband, W. Larry Daughtry. In addition, she is survived by 7 great grandchildren, Bailey Williams, Daughtry Williams, Matthew Taylor, Lauren Taylor, Carter Daughtry, Reece Daughtry, and Kole Daughtry. She is also survived by sisters, Alease T. Barbee of Winston-Salem, Joyce T. Ogburn of Dunn, Bobbi T. Adams of Raleigh, and Susie T. Mewborn of Dunn; and brother, H. A. Turlington, Jr. of Dunn; Aunt, Alene Honeycutt; and sister-in-law, Lela Turlington.
A very special thanks to caregivers, Annie Ruth Adams, Careleen Blackmon, Rose Barbour, Jo-Ann Farvia, and Brookie Jernigan. These five individuals became cherished members of her family over the past two years.
The family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats one hour prior to the service on Tuesday and other times at the home of Gerald and Linda Hayes, 2065 Chicora Road, Dunn, NC.
