Mary Sanderson

May 25, 1923 — July 11, 2014

Mrs. Mary Frances Elwell Sanderson, age 91 of Four Oaks passed away on Friday at Smithfield Manor.  A service to celebrate her life will be held 4:00PM-Monday at the First Baptist Church in Four Oaks.  Rev. John Norman will officiate.  Entombment will follow in Four Oaks City Cemetery. Mrs. Sanderson was born May 25, 1923 in Rocky Mount to the late Eddie & Margaret Ann Gavin Elwell.  She was raised in Duplin County. Mrs. Sanderson was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, John Winchester Sanderson, a daughter, Anne Ogburn, brothers Charlie & Eddie Elwell and a sister Margaret Wilkes.  Mrs. Sanderson was a graduate of Magnolia High School in Magnolia, NC.  A member of the First Baptist Church of Four Oaks, she was involved with many facets of church life including teaching the Beginners and Primary classes, Cradle Roll Director for over 20 years and a WMU Circle member for over 50 years. Mrs. Sanderson was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  She was also a Museum of History Associate and member of the American Legion Auxiliary.  As a homemaker her family was her top priority.  In her early years of life she worked with the Social Security Board in Wilmington.     Surviving include  her children, Carolyn Baggett and husband Gary, Sr. of Roseboro; Joan McLendon and husband Barry of Smithfield, John W. Sanderson, Jr. and wife Stephanye of Willow Spring, Joe Sanderson and wife Francie of Fuquay Varina; Son-In-law, Vic Ogburn of Smithfield,  Grandchildren, Gary Baggett, Jr., Boo Carver, Vic Ogburn, Jessica Johnson, Anna Sanderson, Ashley Sanderson and Katie Sanderson, Great-Grandchildren, Garon Baggett, Gavin Baggett and Jaiden Johnson, Sister, Weida Ligouri of Florida, Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law, Robert O. & Betty Gray Sanderson of Harrells, NC. The family will receive friends 2:30PM - 3:30PM, Monday in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church in Four Oaks. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Four Oaks, PO Box 717, Four Oaks, NC 27524.
