Mr. Melvin Earl Blackmon, age 94, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, after a brief stay at the SECU Hospice House of Johnston UNC Health. A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00AM-Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Blackman’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Four Oaks, NC. Dr. Sam Weeks will officiate.
Mr. Blackmon was born near Blackman’s Crossroads in Johnston County NC on September 5, 1928 to the late Willie Thomas and Vernie Moore Blackmon. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Willie Irvin Blackmon and Billy Bruce Blackmon.
Mr. Blackmon served in the US Army from November 12, 1948 until his honorable discharge on November 12, 1951. While in the military, he was injured and spent one year recovering in Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He enjoyed his employment with Salem Carpet Mills, later known as Shaw Industries, for 29 years where he was noted for numerous safety awards. Over the years, Mr. Blackmon also enjoyed construction projects and built many personal homes with his wife, Grace Jones Blackmon. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, both old and new.
Mr. Blackmon is survived by his wife of 72 years, Grace Jones Blackmon. Daughters, Donna Marie Blackmon Stephenson (Kenneth Stephenson - husband), Lorie Grace Blackmon (Greg Evans – husband). Grandchildren, Kenneth Preston Stephenson Jr. (Melissa Stephenson – wife), Johnathan Ashley Stephenson (Erin Stephenson – wife), Kyle Edwards Stephenson (Blair Stephenson – wife), Brittany Grace Evans Jackson (Chris Jackson – husband), Caroline Lee Evans, and many nieces and great grandchildren.
The family welcomes plants and donations to the charity the individual elects in memory of Mr. Melvin Earl Blackmon.
