She married the love of her life, Jack Ray Littleton, Sr. in 1946. They enjoyed a blissful 8 years together, rearing their 5 children, until a tragic accident took the life of her beloved husband. Widowed at the young age of 24 with 5 small children, out of the ashes of tragedy, the Littleton family matriarch rose to the challenge to meet the needs of her family.
In 1964, Kathleen moved to Benson, NC. Kat quickly gained the title of Benson’s Mother Goose as she provided childcare to innumerable children in the community that extended through multiple generations. She took delight in being Mama Kitty to so many. On any given day at lunch-time you’d find 10 plus kids, an encyclopedia salesman, and the Avon lady sitting around her table, eating one of her cutting-edge casseroles. She loved to cook, and even more, she loved sharing her table with others. She was an All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital kind of lady, so after lunch, she made sure the kids got a lengthy nap every day. Retired, she would reminisce about ¨her¨ many kids and enjoyed getting updates on their lives, as they grew older.
A lover of black coffee, a spotless home, sister Ann’s lemon pie,and a tightly made bed that you dare not sit on, are just a few of the many traits that made Kathleen “Kat”. She lived an amazing, full life that included both difficult and fantastic events that she met with blind optimism each and every day. Even in her final days her optimism and goodness never faded.
Kathleen was the 3rd of eight children. 2 Brothers and 6 sisters. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Littleton. Surviving siblings are Ann Barbour of Benson, Libby Spell of Louisiana, and Bobby Huskey of South Carolina.
Her children are Jack Littleton, Jr. and wife Cherry, John Littleton and wife Candy, Mike Littleton and wife Debbie, Jan Humphries and husband Charles. She was incredibly blessed with 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren who were the light of her life.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Harnett Woods Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunn for their love and care shown to Mrs. Littleton.
