Pauline Johnson

Mrs. Pauline Sloan Johnson, age 97, died Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Morningside Assisted Living in Raleigh. A funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Unity Presbyterian Church, Newton Grove. Officiating will be Rev. Clinton Randall. Burial will follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery near Meadow. Mrs. Johnson was born February 16, 1915 in Calypso, NC, in Duplin County to the late Charles Livingston and Bertie Kornegay Sloan.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, L. Norman Johnson; and sister, Rachel Sloan. Mrs. Johnson resided in the Meadow community for 70 years prior to moving to Morningside Assisted Living in April, 2012.  Mrs. Johnson graduated from Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs in 1937.  She taught home economics at Chinquapin, Eureka, and Meadow, where she met and married her husband. She served as a home demonstration agent in Onslow and Duplin Counties and later resumed teaching home economics at Plainview, Mingo, and again at Meadow High School.  Before her retirement in 1975, she taught at South Johnston High School.  She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church where she was installed as the first female elder.  She was an active participant of the church and was presented with Honorary Lifetime Membership in Presbyterian Women in 1996. Among her accomplishments was contributing to the installation of the first organ for the church. She organized and designed, in part, a project of quilts of religious motifs stitched by ladies in the church that are displayed in the Fellowship Hall. She served as church organist until age 86. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Ruritan and 60 Plus Clubs of Meadow. One special joy in recent times was being a member of the Talk Table group at the restaurants of Meadow.  Surviving are children and spouses - Luther & Sue Johnson of Raleigh, Paula J. & Ronald Eliasek of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Cara J. and Dr. Gerry Hayes of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren - Dr. Daniel Johnson, Marcus Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Ronald Eliasek, Jr., Grier Eliasek, Katherine Wigginton, Elizabeth Hayes, Sumner Hayes, and Samuel Hayes; and eight great-grandchildren - Tyler and Samuel Johnson; Alexandra, Shelby and Davis Eliasek; Remington Eliasek, and Abigail and Kasey Wigginton. Family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Wednesday, August 8, 2012.
