Penola "Penny" Frye Scott

Penny Scott, 75, of Four Oaks, NC entered into the presence and arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, January 6, 2023. Penny was born and raised in Concord, NC where she attended Harrisburg High School, graduating in 1965. Penny was funny, bubbly, witty and a friend to all that met her. She worked in different capacities throughout her worklife, including a supervisory position at Bates Nightwear in Troy; managed the family’s restaurant, The Apollo, in Concord; and  enjoyed working as a hostess at Sunset Grill in Banner Elk, NC. After retirement, she lived with her son and family in the mountains where she enjoyed Sunday morning breakfasts, visiting with friends and watching the world go by from the porch. 

Penny later moved to Four Oaks NC to live with her daughter and family where she enjoyed golf cart rides, watching news and keeping up with current events. Penny, known as “Mawmaw” by her grandchildren, shared such love and joy in life that it kept her young and vibrant. This was how she enjoyed her life following the loss of her husband Charles to cancer in July 2002. She loved and shared a special bond with each of her grandchildren, whether it was watching soccer with Aaron, enjoying a movie with Austin or admiring Eve’s drawings. One legacy she shared with her children and grandchildren is her love of music and enjoyment she received out of dancing. Memories of her singing and dancing will always bring joy to our hearts. The joyful spirit left ingrained in our memories, leaves smiles on our faces.

Penny was preceded in death by her loving parents, Bill Frye, Sr. and Evelyn Louise Yow Frye; brother, Billy Ray Frye, Jr.; her husband, the love of her life for 30 years, Charles Ervin Scott of Troy, NC and fur baby, Dixie of the home. 

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Charles DeLee Scott and loving wife, Michelle of Spruce Pine, NC; and daughter DeAnna Scott Haley and loving husband, Kelvin of Four Oaks, NC; Sister, Paula White and James of Gold Hill, NC. Three precious grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart: James Aaron Haley, Austin Scott Haley of the home, and Evelyn Grace Scott of Spruce Pine, NC. Honorary  “grandsons” Marquise Williams and Garrett Jernigan; a nephew in which she had special bond, Jerry “Jed” Scott; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.

She was especially close to and loved by Terry and Sharon Goins, Susan McCaskill, Gerald and Kathy Phillips, Andy and Helen Viola; honorary daughter Becky Shearer; her four-legged fur babies, Izzie, Carti, Max, and Cali. The family appreciates all the support, prayers, kind words, and love expressed during our difficult time. 

A brief celebration of life in remembrance of Penola will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 5:00 pm in the sanctuary at  Lees Chapel Church in Four Oaks, NC, with the service being led by Pastor Rodney Raby. The family will be available for friends and fellowship following the service at the church.

A second service will be held in her hometown of Troy, NC on Saturday January 14, 2023 from 12pm -2pm at Bumgarner Family Funeral Service, 620 Albemarle Rd Troy, NC 27371.
