Benson, NC: Mr. Raeford Lee Capps, age 84, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2020 at his daughter's residence. The family will hold private services. Mr. Capps was born on September 18, 1936 in Johnston County to the late William Alfred and Nellie Norris Capps. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Dudley, and a sister, Violet Beasley Johnson.
Ray was a member of the Benson Pentecostal Holiness Church and faithful in his attendance after re-dedicating his life to the Lord in 1991. He was a proud veteran of the US Army. Ray was a dedicated and faithful employee and a disabled retiree of Johnson and Johnson Chicopee Plant in Benson with 20 years of service. He loved his work and all of his Chicopee family. He was a Supply Clerk in the Maintenance Department and always responded mischievously to his nickname, "Flash". Ray was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1970, but never let his diagnosis define who he was. He was a fierce fighter who fought to the very end. He never complained but accepted his disability with the greatest humility which we all should aspire to possess. His last four years have been very challenging for Ray. Cindy and Sue would like to thank Liberty Hospice and Liberty Homecare for the excellent care, love and support they gave Ray and them.
Surviving include his daughter, Cindy Herring and husband, Jay of Dunn; siblings, W.A. Capps and wife, Mary Ellen of Pensacola, Florida; Mary Ellen Johnson of Benson; Sue Hall and husband, Larry of Benson and Mike Capps and wife, Janet of Pine Level; grandchildren, Crystal Blackman and fiancé, Justin; Michael Blackman and wife, Tiffany; Brad Herring and wife, Stephanie; Chad Herring and fiancée, Ashley; and Eric Herring and wife, Taylor; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
