Smithfield, NC: Mr. Ray Von Jernigan, age 79, of Steven’s Sausage Road passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at his home. Graveside Services will be held 3:00PM Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Hood’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Newton Grove, NC. Rev. Walter Blackman will officiate.
Mr. Jernigan was born on September 9, 1942 in Johnston County to the late Jesse James and Myrtle Irene Jernigan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Massengill Jernigan; grandson, Richard Conklin; brothers, Joseph Carol Jernigan, Owen Glenwood Jernigan, John Martin Jernigan, Jesse Calvin Jernigan. Mr. Jernigan was a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam Conflict as a Military Police. One of his greatest honors serving as a policeman is being in the protective honor guard for President John F. Kennedy. Mr. Jernigan retired from Steven’s Sausage Company as plant foreman from 52 years. He was a member of the DAV in Smithfield, American Legion in Selma, and a member of New Zealand Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Jernigan also loved his Snead’s Ferry community for over 40 years.
Surviving include his son, Tony Jernigan and wife, Susan of Selma; grandchildren, James Jernigan and wife, Taylor, Anthony Jernigan, Victoria Johnson and husband, Burke, Julia Turnage and husband, Chris; great-grandchildren, Caroline Johnson, Preston Johnson, Charlotte Johnson; sisters and brothers, Willa Dean Nichols of Micro, Linda Ruth Toole of Micro, Dale Johnson and husband, Bruce of Clayton, Jimmy Jernigan of Micro, Eddie Jernigan and wife, Rose of Texas, Danny Brown and wife, Jennifer of Pennsylvania; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.
