Richard Lee Freeman (Lee) passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen Haussmann Freeman, and his brother, Robert (Bobby) Freeman. He is survived by his three children: Kenton William Freeman and his wife Patti Freeman; Samantha Karen Freeman; and Susanna Lee Freeman Skinner and her husband William Skinner. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy and pride.
Lee graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1954 and went on to earn his degree from the University of North Carolina in 1958. While at UNC, he played on the tennis team and became a lifelong fan of Tar Heels basketball—a passion that endured throughout his life. He also enjoyed coaching youth sports, especially baseball and basketball, sharing his love of the game and his encouragement with young athletes. He spent his professional life in accounting, including many years of service with the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C., and later in Raleigh, North Carolina. But his true legacy lies in the love he gave and the relationships he nurtured—as a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Lee and his wife Karen, along with their family, attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Goldsboro when they lived in the area.
Even as the effects of dementia became more pronounced, Lee’s ever-bright personality and joyful presence endured. He continued to smile, to connect, and to cheer for his beloved Tar Heels. He spent his final years in the loving care of his daughter Samantha and granddaughter Sammie, with whom he shared a home. The family is also deeply grateful to Rita Houston, a treasured caregiver and close friend, who supported Lee with compassion and devotion for many years.
A private family service will be held. Lee will be laid to rest alongside his father, mother, and wife in the Lee family cemetery in Meadow, North Carolina—a place deeply rooted in love, family, and memory. Lee’s life was one of kindness, loyalty, and gentle strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements are being handled by Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.
