Sarah Clayton

August 23, 1936 — October 6, 2018

Sarah Ellen Whittington Clayton went to be with her Lord and Savior at 12:54 p.m. on October 6, surrounded by her family and friends. Sarah was a dedicated follower of Christ, a loving family member, and an important part of the community. She began her life on August 23, 1936 in the Byrdtown Community of Benson, North Carolina. When she graduated from Benson High School in 1954, she was named salutatorian. In her younger years, Sarah held the office of secretary at Pleasant Hill Christian Church for over 25 years. From 1963 to 1998, she worked at First Citizens Bank in Benson. In her later life, Sarah founded the Benson chapter of the Widowed People’s Association in 2003. She also had the honor of being named Benson Senior Citizen of the year. Sarah was a member of New Hope Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where she was a deaconess. To all who knew her, Sarah was a strong, smart, and loving woman. Words cannot describe all that she did for others throughout her life. She was truly made in Christ’s image. Her parents, Lee and Tunie Whittington, and her husband of 47 years, James Robin Clayton, preceded her in death. She is survived by her three daughters, Susan Clayton Byrd, Cathy Lynn Clayton, and Abbie Clayton Brummett and husband Steve; three grandchildren, Lindsay Robin Byrd, Emily Caroline Brummett, and Laura Elizabeth Brummett; and two great grandchildren, Holland Brooke Hayes and Cameron Zane Hayes. She was incredibly dedicated to loving her children and grandchildren. The only thing that brought Sarah more joy than her family was the Lord. Although she will be leaving a loving family behind, she will be entering a much greater family in heaven, where there will be no pain or suffering. Special thanks to Sarah’s caregivers Carol, Cathy, Glenda and Julia Funeral services were held Monday, October 8, 2018, at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson.  Rev. Joe Glover and Rev. Dan Kirk officiated.  Burial was in Fellowship Community Cemetery in Angier.
