Sgt. Major (Ret.) Doane Roland Johnson

Vass, NC:  Sergeant Major (Ret) Doane Roland Johnson, age 82, of 329 Loblolly Drive died Wednesday at Womack Army Medical Hospital in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be 4:00PM Saturday at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Benson. Officiating will be Rev. James Gaulden and Rev. Isabel Lopez. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with military honors. Sergeant Major (Ret) Johnson was a native of Johnston County, born on July 23, 1933 to the late Atlee and Claudia Wilson Johnson.  He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty J. Biddell. Sergeant Major (Ret) Johnson served with distinction over a 30 year career in the United States Army.  A Vietnam Veteran and Green Beret, SGM (R) Johnson's many awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with "V" device, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze and Silver Stars, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.  His assignments took him around the world and his language proficiency included German, Spanish, and Portuguese. SGM (R) Johnson was a star athlete at Benson High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball.  He was an All American selectee while playing basketball for the Georgia Military Academy.  He was a graduate of Campbell University where he received a BA in Business Administration.  He loved the game of golf and remained an active player into his 82nd year. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Eleanor Stewart Johnson; sons, Chaffey Johnson of Fayetteville and Travis Johnson of Fort Mill, SC; three grandchildren; and brothers, Rollins Johnson of Smithfield and Charles Johnson of Cary. The family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson from 3:00PM to 3:45PM Saturday prior to the service. Flowers are welcomed; however,  memorials may be made to one's favorite charity. The family would like to thank the staff and doctors at Womack Army Medical Hospital, especially Ward 4 South, for their dedicated, kind, and attentive care.
