Shelton Benson

December 22, 1920 — November 25, 2013

McGee’s Crossroads, NC: Mr. Shelton Alonzo Benson, age 92, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation of Johnston County. Funeral service will be 5:00PM Friday, November 29, 2013 at Benson Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Billy Cashwell. Graveside Service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson. Mr. Benson was born December 22, 1920 in Johnston County to the late Edgar Alonzo and Mary Coats Benson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen R. Benson, and a son, Dr. Douglas Benson. Mr. Benson was a farmer and a member of Benson Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Benson Masonic Relief Lodge 431 for 65 plus years.  Mr. Benson served his community in many ways including being on the school boards of both Benson and South Johnston Schools. He served on the Johnston Community College Board of Trustees, held positions on the Johnston County Health Department Board of Directors, as well as on the First Federal Bank Board of Directors. Mr. Benson was a charter member of the 50/210 Fire Department where he also served as member of the board of directors. The family would like to thank Dr. Bugaj and the staff at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation for their loving care given to Mr. Benson. Surviving include, Daughters, Kathy Lancaster of Angier, Shelby Darden of Garner; Sons and Daughters-In-Law, Randy and Ann Benson of Willow Spring, Dan and Susan Benson of Angier; Daughter-In-Law, Louise Benson of Lake Gaston; Eight Grandchildren, Cara Myers of Tampa, FL, Kristen Capo of Tampa, Fl, Austin Benson of Willow Spring, Bill Lovelace of Lake Gaston, Jim Lovelace of Wake Forest, Kerry Spitzer of Boulder, CO, Timothy Darden and Patrick Darden both of Garner; Five Great-Grandchildren, Nicholas and Zachary Capo, Wit and Luke Myers, and Jacob Lovelace; Sister, Eloise Worrell of Florida; Several Nieces and Nephews; Special Friend, Macie Knox of Dunn. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service and other times at the home of Kathy Lancaster 7713 NC Hwy 50 North Angier, NC 27501. Flowers are welcome; however memorials may be made to the Shelton and Kathleen Benson Nursing Scholarship Foundation at Johnston Community College, P. O. Box  2350 Smithfield, NC, 27577.
