Tommy Ray Johnson, Sr., born on April 14, 1934, in Johnston County, North Carolina, passed away on January 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He lived a life full of purpose and dedication, deeply valued by all who knew him.
Bud had a commendable career as an insurance agent, where he devoted his professional life to serving others. He had the gift of gab, never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone he met.
After his retirement, he found immense joy in nurturing a garden, turning his attention to the earth and its growth. Thinking of others as he always did, he gathered and delivered his produce to those who were shut in and unable to gather their own. His passion for living life to its fullest mirrored his love for family, which was the centerpiece of his life. He cherished moments spent with those he loved, fostering bonds that brought joy and comfort.
Bud also proudly served in the Army, an experience that instilled in him values of discipline and commitment that he carried throughout his life. As a young fellow, he was instrumental helping establish the Benson National Guard and was a member of the Benson American Legion in his later years.
He is survived by his children, Mitchell Johnson, Juanita Johnson and Tommy Ray Johnson, Jr.; and his granddaughter Claire T. Johnson, who was the apple of his eye. Bud is also remembered by his sisters, Nancy Johnson Keith and Cherry Johnson Littleton, along with several nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and love.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Kathleen B. Johnson, as well as his father, Tommie Valton Johnson, his mother, Rabie Pearson McLamb Johnson, his brother, Wade “Boss” Johnson and his sister, Katie Johnson Morgan.
A visitation to honor Bud will be held on January 31, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM, followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, both taking place at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Inc., located at 301 W. Main St., Benson, NC 27504.
Bud’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, reminding all of the joy he brought and the love he shared throughout his life.
