William (Billy) W. Massengill, Sr., age 85 of Dunn, N.C. died on January 18th at Central Harnett Hospital. Funeral Services will be 1:00PM-Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Benson Baptist Church in Benson, NC. Dr. Lawrence Powers will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Benson, NC.
Born in Four Oaks, Billy was the son of the late Lillian M. Johnson and Norwood L. Massengill. He was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy M. MacDonald. Billy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda Lee Massengill and his children, William W. Massengill, Jr. (Elaine); Sandra M. Jones (Jeffrey); Gail M. Adams (Con). He also survived by six (6) grandchildren: Jonathan McQuade, Maria McQuade, Brittany Adams, Will Massengill, Caroline Massengill, Thomas McQuade and one great-grandchild, Robert McQuade.
A graduate of Riverside Military Academy, Billy spent many years working with his father-in-law, John K. Lee as the Parts Manager of Barnes and Lee Chevrolet in Benson. After leaving Barnes and Lee in the 1980’s he transitioned to full time work in managing the family farm which included the raising of tobacco, cattle and hay. Billy was honored in 2000 as the Coats, N.C. “Farmer of the Year”.
Billy loved amateur radios and was one of the founding members of the Johnston Amateur Radio Society (JARS). He was the 2001 JARS ham radio operator of the year. For many years he was involved with the JARS annual field day. Billy served as a board member of the Benson Housing Authority from 1966-1979 having served as the Chairman during this period. He was a member of Benson Baptist Church.
Mr. Massengill will be available for viewing and you may sign the register book from 12:00PM-5:00PM on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC. The family will not be present during this time.
The family ask that in lieu of flowers, anyone who wishes to memorialize Billy’s memory may do so with memorial gifts to Benson Baptist Church, P.O. Box 323, Benson, N.C. 27504.
In accordance with NC-COVID-19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing, and the three W's: wait, wash, and wear a face covering. Masks are required for all services.
