William "Bill" Matthew Dixon, 75, of Fayetteville, signed off the air on February 13, 2014 at the SECU Hospice House in Johnston County. Bill was born on September 28, 1938 to Zeno and Mary Dixon of Kenly, NC.
Growing up an only child, Bill exhibited an entrepreneurial streak at an early age. He sold GRIT newspapers, rented his bicycle to neighboring children and operated a homemade convenience store out of his parent's home, selling snacks and drinks to local field hands.
By his teens he had discovered his two greatest pursuits, a deep and lifelong appreciation of music and a passion for radio production. He was able to combine the two during his early adulthood as a radio announcer at various stations in eastern North Carolina. Bill later put aside his radio aspirations for marriage and family life. His career path took him on a journey through advertising, sales and finally retail management.
Throughout his life, Bill was known for his razor wit, self-deprecating humor and the deep and reassuring quality of his voice. During his retirement years he was able to return to his radio roots, lending his vocal cords to a radio reading service for the blind, narrating local stage productions and radio advertisement voice-overs.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Zeno and Mary, his wife, Sue Shaw Dixon, and his grandson, Steven Holland. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Currie of Smithfield, his son and daughter-in-law, Cabot and Julie Dixon, of Raleigh, his grandchildren, Rob Gordon, Phillip Liverman and Walker Dixon and two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Rylan.
A memorial visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:00pm at Carolina Highlands at Village Green, 1919 Fordham Dr., Fayetteville, NC 28304.
A private graveside service will follow on Sunday in Kenly, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's name may be made to the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC or the American Cancer Society.
